About us and the story so far....

FOGSW Are a group of residents that have come together to protect George Street Woods.

We
are campaigning to protect the land by
appealing for the land to become a 'Community Green Space' so it can be used for local residents to enjoy.

  • A local resident is claiming possession of the Wood forpersonal use and financial gain.

  • Has already felled or damaged several trees and attempts to removemore trees and saplings.

  • Erected boards along George Street and around car park and fixed metal wire fencing panels to church fence.

  • Barbed wire and metal fencing strung between trees.

  • Repeatedly blocks entrances to prevent public access.

  • Children and adults are photographed using the Wood.

  • Sections of metal wire fencing left in the middle of the Wood and padlocked together.

  • Plans to build a tourist facility including holiday flats, shower block, reception area and hard standing for motorhomes and camper vans. That could lead to loss of public amenity, access and right to roam.

  • Habitat destruction affecting bird life and bats air, noise and light pollution, and traffic congestion loss of green space for quiet relaxation diminishing a natural corridor along Glossop Brook.

  • Has submitted planning applications for unspecified engineering works, change of use and boundary works.

  • Alleges criminal damage and provocation by children and adults using the Wood.

  • Accuses public officials of malpractice.

  • Harasses people planning activities in the Wood and attempts to disrupt community events.
  • Campaigning for a temporary Tree Preservation Order now made permanent.

  • Disrupting demands to remove further trees and saplings.

  • Installed hand rails to ease access into the Woodand put a gate in the church fence.

  • Removed metal wire fence from the church boundary and barbed wire from inside the Wood.

  • Application with Derbyshire County Council to register the Wood as a Town or Village Green —decision pending.

  • Planted150 saplings donated by the Woodland Trust including one grown from seed gathered in a royal estate.

  • Unveiled a plaque commemorating the planting of a Royal Oak sapling to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

  • Holding community picnics, art works, story telling and other events in the Wood including a party for children’s teddy bears and a neighbour’s birthday.

  • Spreading wood chippings on the car park and picking up litter and broken glass in the Wood.

  • Instigated removal of metal fencing left in the Wood.

  • Planting hundreds of daffodil, narcissi and native bluebell bulbs, as well as wild flower seeds.

  • Campaigned to designate the Wood as Local Green Space in the new Local Plan for Glossopdale.

  • Implementing a Woodland Management Plan and Survey.

  • Installed bird boxes and bench seats.

  • Challenging planning applications, building projects and the private claim for exclusive possession.
